The new GM truck software introduces a redesigned user interface that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto side by side with native controls. General Motors announced that the updated software architecture will debut on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 models scheduled for release later this year.
Unified Display Architecture and Phone Projection
Rather than replacing native automotive menus entirely, the updated interface uses a card-based window for smartphone projection. Drivers can run navigation or audio via Apple CarPlay while maintaining visible access to trailering diagnostics, climate tools, and vehicle settings on the main screen, according to reporting by Ars Technica.
The system operates on Android Automotive OS with expanded split-screen capabilities. In previous iterations, accessing specific route details forced drivers out of the primary view into full-screen maps. The new interface allows complete interaction directly within the active window, minimizing unnecessary taps.
“If you wanted to search something or provide feedback on road conditions or something like that, when you tapped on the screen, it took you out of the home screen and took you to the full-screen maps. Here, you can do everything that full-screen maps can do right inside this window.”

Hardware Controls and Safety Considerations
Despite offering over 60 inches of combined digital display space across select configurations, the automaker preserved physical hardware dials for climate controls and fan speeds. Mechanical buttons remain positioned beneath the central screen to handle temperature adjustments and window demisting, complementing the digital interface.
Engineers also integrated smartphone-inspired features to streamline everyday operation. A swipe-down notification drawer offers quick access to device pairing, privacy configurations, and microphone toggles. Furthermore, incoming phone calls no longer override active navigation screens, preventing sudden interruptions while driving.
Tailored Features in the GM Truck Software
The instrument cluster behind the steering wheel features customizable layouts powered by local dimming technology for low-glare nighttime driving. Modes include a dedicated view for Super Cruise driver assistance, specialized gauges for off-road navigation, and an ultra-minimalist digital speedometer layout.
Hauling functionality receives dedicated software tools as well. The connected system includes trailer-aware routing through Google Maps, which automatically calculates routes suited to trailer dimensions saved in the driver’s vehicle profile.
Rollout Strategy and Passenger Technology
An optional passenger display features a polarized filter to prevent driver distraction while playing video or browsing the web. Front passengers can connect Bluetooth headphones or plug media sources directly into an integrated knee-level HDMI port.
The latest GM truck software will launch exclusively on newly manufactured pickup trucks, which represent roughly 900,000 annual vehicle sales for the company. Existing truck models will not receive the redesigned interface through retroactive updates.
