{"id":12922,"date":"2019-12-17T03:19:35","date_gmt":"2019-12-17T00:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/?p=12922"},"modified":"2026-03-27T18:51:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T15:51:57","slug":"first-bluekeep-attacks-prompt-fresh-warnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/first-bluekeep-attacks-prompt-fresh-warnings\/","title":{"rendered":"First BlueKeep attacks prompt fresh warnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><u>By \u201cAmer Owaida\u201d, Security Writer at ESET<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ever since it was discovered six months ago, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2019\/05\/22\/patch-now-bluekeep-vulnerability\/\">BlueKeep vulnerability<\/a>\u00a0has had (not only) the cybersecurity community concerned about impending\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2017\/05\/15\/wannacryptor-key-questions-answered\/\">WannaCryptor-style attacks<\/a>. Earlier in November, Microsoft together with security researchers Kevin Beaumont and Marcus Hutchins\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/2019\/11\/07\/the-new-cve-2019-0708-rdp-exploit-attacks-explained\/\">shed light on the first malicious campaign<\/a>\u00a0that was aimed at exploiting the critical remote code execution (RCE) flaw. The attacks targeted unpatched vulnerable Windows systems to install cryptocurrency mining software, but were a far cry from the damage caused by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2018\/05\/14\/wannacryptor-curious-tale\/\">WannaCryptor<\/a>\u00a0aka WannaCry in May 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tracked as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2019-0708\">CVE-2019-0708<\/a>, BlueKeep was found in a Windows component known as Remote Desktop Services. It affects machines running unpatched versions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Unfortunately, there is still a great number of systems that haven\u2019t been patched, even though Microsoft rolled out the patch on May 14<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first instances of the coin mining campaign date back to October 23<sup>rd<\/sup>. Upon further inspection by Microsoft researchers, they found that an earlier campaign that occurred in September used a main implant that contacted the same\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virusradar.com\/en\/glossary\/command-and-control-server\">command-and-control<\/a>\u00a0(C&amp;C) servers as the October attack. Machines in a number of countries were affected, including France, Russia, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, Germany, and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The attackers have used a BlueKeep exploit that was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/metasploit-team-releases-bluekeep-exploit\/\">released by the Metasploit team<\/a>\u00a0in September. They would first sweep the internet for machines with vulnerable internet-facing RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) services, then deploy the exploit and install the cryptocurrency mining software.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The exploit is unstable as can be seen by the multiple recorded RDP-related crashes that were reported by the Microsoft security signals. The crashes were also the reason the attacks were uncovered in October by security researcher Kevin Beaumont after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doublepulsar.com\/bluekeep-exploitation-activity-seen-in-the-wild-bd6ee6e599a6\">he reported<\/a>\u00a0that his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honeypot_(computing)\">honeypots<\/a>\u00a0were crashing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the attack may seem underwhelming considering the media coverage the BlueKeep vulnerability has received, the worst may still be in store. The vulnerability is\u00a0\u2018wormable\u2019, which means that future exploits might use it to spread malware within or outside of networks in similar ways to what was seen with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2017\/05\/13\/wanna-cryptor-ransomware-outbreak\/\">WannaCryptor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The gravity of the situation should not be underestimated, with Microsoft issuing three alerts since May and urging its users to patch and update vulnerable machines.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2019\/07\/17\/bluekeep-patching-progress\/\">Earlier this year<\/a>, the United States\u2019\u00a0National Security Agency\u00a0(NSA) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency\u00a0(CISA) have issued rare warnings of their own.
