{"id":21187,"date":"2021-03-04T18:44:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T15:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/?p=21187"},"modified":"2026-03-27T20:39:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T17:39:37","slug":"abbott-researchers-find-rare-group-of-people-with-controlled-hiv-who-could-be-a-key-to-unlocking-cure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/abbott-researchers-find-rare-group-of-people-with-controlled-hiv-who-could-be-a-key-to-unlocking-cure\/","title":{"rendered":"Abbott Researchers Find Rare Group of People with Controlled HIV Who Could Be a Key to Unlocking Cure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/ar\/?p=37516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u0639\u0631\u0628\u064a<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Study of more than 10,000 people identifies a rare group with controlled HIV in the Democratic Republic of Congo, suggesting additional research could uncover links between natural virus suppression and future treatments&nbsp;<\/li><li>Discovery is a result of Abbott\u2019s continued virus hunting efforts, which also uncovered a new strain of HIV in 2019&nbsp;<\/li><li>Abbott\u2019s decades of work in global viral surveillance has advanced the understanding of HIV and allowed the company to quickly respond to the COVID-19 pandemic with its diagnostic tests&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abbott announced today that a team of scientists has found an unusually high number of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who test positive for HIV antibodies, but have low to non-detectable viral load counts \u2013 without the use of anti-retroviral treatment.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/73351C53-2A5E-45D5-94AC-878FCEACD474#_edn1\"><sup>[i]<\/sup><\/a><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup>&nbsp;These people are referred to as HIV elite controllers.&nbsp;These groundbreaking findings published today in&nbsp;<em>EBioMedicine \u2013&nbsp;<\/em>part of<em>&nbsp;The Lancet,&nbsp;<\/em>may help researchers uncover biological trends within this population that could lead to advancements in HIV treatments \u2013 and potentially vaccines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers from Abbott, Johns Hopkins, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, University of Missouri \u2013 Kansas City and the Universit\u00e9 Protestante au Congo found that the prevalence of HIV elite controllers was 2.7-4.3% in the DRC \u2013 compared to a 0.1-2% prevalence worldwide. This new research will fuel additional studies that look to understand this unique immune response. Findings from the study could lead researchers closer to their goal of ending the HIV pandemic by uncovering links between natural virus suppression and future treatments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The finding of a large group of HIV elite controllers in the DRC is significant considering that HIV is a life-long, chronic condition that typically progresses over time,&#8221;&nbsp;said Tom Quinn, M.D., director of Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health, and chief of the International HIV\/AIDS Research Section of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, and one of the study authors.&nbsp;&#8220;There have been rare instances of the infection not progressing in individuals prior to this study, but this high frequency is unusual and suggests there is something interesting happening at a physiological level in the DRC that\u2019s not random.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the beginning of the global AIDS pandemic, 76 million people have been infected with HIV and 38 million people today are living with the virus.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/73351C53-2A5E-45D5-94AC-878FCEACD474#_edn2\"><sup>[ii]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;As the first to develop an approved FDA test for HIV more than thirty years ago, Abbott understands the importance of HIV research and established&nbsp;its Global Viral&nbsp;Surveillance Program&nbsp;to identify HIV and hepatitis mutations \u2013 ensuring its diagnostic tests remain up to date.&nbsp;With the&nbsp;origins&nbsp;of the HIV pandemic traced to sub-Saharan Africa, specifically the DRC, this region is of specific interest to the scientific community.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/73351C53-2A5E-45D5-94AC-878FCEACD474#_edn3\"><sup>[iii]<\/sup><\/a><sup>,<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/73351C53-2A5E-45D5-94AC-878FCEACD474#_edn4\"><sup>[iv]<\/sup><\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;These new findings from Abbott researchers and partners are a continuation of virus hunting efforts that led to the identification of a new strain of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abbott.mediaroom.com\/2019-11-06-Abbott-Announces-Discovery-of-New-Strain-of-HIV-Keeping-Global-Health-Community-a-Step-Ahead-of-the-Virus\">HIV in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Global surveillance work keeps us ahead of emerging infectious diseases \u2013 and in this instance we realized we had found something that could be another step toward unlocking a cure for HIV,&#8221;&nbsp;said Michael Berg, Ph.D., an associate research fellow in infectious disease research at Abbott, and lead author of the study.&nbsp;&#8220;The global research community has more work to do \u2013 but&nbsp;harnessing what we learn from this study and sharing it with other researchers puts us closer to new treatments that could possibly eliminate HIV.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plasma samples from surveillance efforts collected in 1987, 2001-03 and 2017-19 in the DRC \u2013 home to the oldest known HIV strains \u2013 allowed researchers to rule out false positives, collection site bias, high genetic diversity and anti-retroviral treatment as the cause of non-detectable viral counts in 10,457 patients from 2017 to 2019.
