This can be downloading malware, providing access to systems or data, offering up personal details, or transferring money. Oftentimes, these \u201cspoofed\u201d emails appear to come from reputable organizations, putting not only the targets at risk but the reputations of those corporations whose domain was abused. What\u2019s more, spoofed emails can be part of larger, multi-stage attacks, such as those to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/corporate-doxing\/101513\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dox corporations<\/a>. And these attacks are on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From April to May 2021, the total number of email spoofing attacks nearly doubled from&nbsp;<strong>4,440 to 8,204.<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;These types of attacks can be done in multiple ways. The easiest is what\u2019s called \u201clegitimate domain spoofing\u201d. This is where someone inserts the domain of the organization being spoofed into the \u201cFrom\u201d header, making it incredibly difficult to distinguish a fake email from a real one. However, if a company has implemented one of the newer mail authentication methods, then attackers must resort to another method.&nbsp;&nbsp;This can be in the form \u201cdisplay name spoofing\u201d, whereby attackers spoof the individual sending the email, i.e. making it look as if it\u2019s been sent by a real employee of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More sophisticated spoofing attacks involve lookalike domains: the attackers use specific registered domains that look similar to those of legitimate organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Example-of-a-message-from-a-lookalike-domain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"925\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Example-of-a-message-from-a-lookalike-domain.jpg\" alt=\"Example of a message from a lookalike domain\" class=\"wp-image-25736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Example-of-a-message-from-a-lookalike-domain.jpg 925w, https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Example-of-a-message-from-a-lookalike-domain-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saudishopper.com.sa\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Example-of-a-message-from-a-lookalike-domain-768x438.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 925px) 100vw, 925px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Example of a message from a lookalike domain<\/em><em><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the example above, attackers sent out an email that appeared to be from the German mail company Deutsche Post&nbsp;<strong>(deutschepost.de). The message claims you need to pay for the delivery of a package, but, if you click on the link to do so, not only will you lose 3 euros but you\u2019ll hand your card details to fraudsters. Upon closer examination, users could note the spelling error in the domain name\u2014and thus realize the email was a fake. However, this is not possible with Unicode spoofing.&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unicode is a standard used to code domains, but, when domain names use non-Latin elements, these elements are converted from Unicode to another encoding system. The result is that, at a code level, two domain names may look different\u2014say kaspersky.com and kaspersky.com with a Cyrillic y\u2014but when the emails are sent, they\u2019ll both appear as \u201ckaspersky.com\u201d in the \u201cFrom\u201d header.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSpoofing may seem primitive when compared to some of other techniques used by cybercriminals, but it can be very effective. It can also just be the first stage of a more complex business email compromise (BEC) attack\u2014attacks that can lead to identity theft and business downtime, as well as significant monetary losses. The good news is that there are a range of anti-spoofing protection solutions available and new authentication standards that can keep your business email secure,\u201d comments Roman Dedenok, security expert at Kaspersky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more about the different ways spoofing attacks can occur and how to stay safe on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/email-spoofing-types\/102703\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Securelist<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>To reduce the risk of your corporation falling victim to spoofing, Kaspersky experts recommend the following:&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><em>Adopt an email authentication method, such as\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/36c3-fake-emails\/32362\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPF, DKIM or DMARC<\/a>, for your corporate email.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\" start=\"2\"><li><em>Implement a\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/enterprise-security\/security-awareness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>security awareness training course<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0that covers the email security topic.
