The combination of\u00a0fuel cells\u00a0and the high-performance battery\u00a0is set to enrich the company\u2019s portfolio by adding\u00a0a unique form of the drive system\u00a0for the premium segment. And it will also gain substantially in importance as far as personal mobility is concerned. We think&nbsp;hydrogen-powered&nbsp;vehicles are ideally placed technologically to fit alongside battery-electric vehicles and&nbsp;<strong>complete the electric mobility picture<\/strong>,\u201d said&nbsp;<strong>Oliver Zipse<\/strong>, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, in Munich on Wednesday. \u201cBy commencing small-scale production of fuel cells today, we are demonstrating the technical maturity of this type of drive system and underscoring its potential for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur many years of research and development work have enabled us to get the very most out of hydrogen technology,\u201d added\u00a0<strong>Frank Weber<\/strong>, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Development. \u201cWe have managed to\u00a0<strong>more than double the fuel cell\u2019s continuous output<\/strong>\u00a0in the second-generation fuel cell in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.bmwgroup.com\/global\/article\/search\/BMW%20iX5%20Hydrogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>BMW iX5 Hydrogen<\/strong><\/a>, while weight and size have both decreased drastically.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to these advances, the BMW Group leads the way in developing\u00a0hydrogen\u00a0technology. In our view, hydrogen, one of the most efficient options for storing and transporting renewable energy, is the missing piece of the puzzle that can complement electromobility. It will contribute to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and play a major role as a fuel in this region of the world.\u201d said Dr. Hamid Haqparwar, Managing Director at BMW Group Middle East.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Technological expertise and high standards of efficiency in the drive system<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BMW Group will manufacture highly efficient fuel\u00a0cell systems\u00a0at its in-house competence center for\u00a0hydrogen. This technology is one of the core elements in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and generates a\u00a0<strong>high continuous output<\/strong>\u00a0of 125 kW\/170 hp. It teams up with an electric motor featuring fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and a high-performance battery purpose developed for this vehicle to enable its powertrain to deliver 275 kW\/374 hp. Hydrogen-powered combustion engines had already been in use before the arrival of the fuel cell system. Efficiency considerations prompted the BMW Group to continue development work in this area from 2015 with the BMW\u00a05\u00a0Series GT Hydrogen Cell based on fuel cell technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Production of fuel cell systems in Munich<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A chemical reaction occurs in the fuel cell between hydrogen from the tanks and oxygen from the air. Maintaining a steady supply of both elements to the fuel cell\u2019s membrane is crucial for the drive system\u2019s efficiency. In addition to the\u00a0technological equivalents of features found on combustion engines, such as charge air coolers, air filters, control units, and sensors, the BMW Group also developed special hydrogen components for its new fuel cell system. These include the high-speed compressor with turbine and high-voltage coolant pump, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BMW Group sources the individual fuel cells required for manufacturing the BMW iX5 Hydrogen from the Toyota Motor Corporation. The two companies have enjoyed a partnership characterized by the trust for years and have collaborated on fuel cell drive systems since 2013. Fuel cell systems are manufactured in two main steps. The individual fuel cells are first assembled into a\u00a0<strong>fuel cell stack<\/strong>. The next step involves fitting all the other components to produce a complete fuel cell system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stacking the fuel cells is a fully automated process. Once the individual components have been inspected for damage, the stack is compressed by a machine with a force of five tonnes and placed in a housing. The stack housing is manufactured in the light metal foundry at BMW Group Plant Landshut using a sand casting technique. For this, molten aluminum is poured into a mold made from compacted sand mixed with resin in a\u00a0<strong>process specially designed for this small-series vehicle<\/strong>. The pressure plate, which delivers hydrogen and oxygen to the fuel cell stack, is made from cast plastic parts and light-alloy castings, also from the Landshut plant. The pressure plate forms a gas-tight and water-tight seal around the stack housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final assembly of the\u00a0fuel cell stacks\u00a0includes a voltage test and extensive testing of the chemical reaction within the cells.
