This move further reinforces the company\u2019s sustainability commitments and scales the accessibility of more sustainable card offerings for consumers seeking a way to reduce the environmental impact of their wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From January 1, 2028, all newly\u2013produced plastic payment cards will be required to be made from more sustainable materials \u2013 including recycled or bio-sourced plastics such as&nbsp;<a>rPVC, rPET, or PLA<\/a><a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/FF82883D-1364-4399-9523-710890A298E1#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; and approved through a certification program, in a first move for a payment network. The&nbsp;company will support its global issuing partners through the transition away from virgin PVC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mastercard launched its Sustainable Card Program in 2018. Since then, over 330 issuers across 80 countries have signed up, working&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mastercard.com\/news\/press\/2018\/greener-payments-partnership\/\">in partnership<\/a>&nbsp;with major card manufacturers to transition more than 168 million cards across its network to recycled and bio-based materials.&nbsp;Today\u2019s announcement further accelerates these efforts, while also complimenting the company\u2019s work to deliver innovative, digital-first card programs that fully eliminate the need for a physical card offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rule change will see all newly made cards certified by Mastercard to assess their composition and sustainability claims; this certification will then be validated by an independent third-party auditor. Mastercard\u2019s participant banks span more than 80 different countries worldwide. It launched the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mastercard.com\/news\/press\/2021\/june\/mastercard-empowers-consumers-to-choose-a-sustainable-future-with-eco-friendly-cards\/\">Mastercard Card Eco-Certification<\/a>(&#8220;CEC&#8221;) scheme in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Driving a More Sustainable Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tackling the global climate crisis will take all of us.
