The truth is that every city, town, village, and hamlet is affected \u2013 albeit to differing degrees \u2013 by the same problem: Britain\u2019s 5G connection is decidedly crap\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article mentions that a study by the research firm Opensignal in 2023 found that UK mobile users had the\u00a0worst average\u00a05G download\u00a0speeds\u00a0of all G7 countries. And Japan and the UK are the only countries in that group to have seen performance drop year on year. In the UK,\u00a017% of\u00a0mobile users report network connections and signal issues. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smf.co.uk\/publications\/growing-connections-5g-in-uk\/\">recent report<\/a>\u00a0by the Social Market Foundation found that British users get access to 5G about 10% of the time, compared with more than 40% in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The writer then asks, \u201cWhy are we so data-poor?\u201d The obvious answer is Boris Johnson\u2019s government&#8217;s decision\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/huawei-to-be-removed-from-uk-5g-networks-by-2027\">in July 2020<\/a>\u00a0to uninstall all products made by Huawei, one of the world\u2019s largest telecoms companies, from the country\u2019s 5G network by 2027. At the same time, the government barred the purchase of any new Huawei connectivity kit from the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cutting out the world\u2019s best-known provider of 5G connectivity hardware was a bold decision\u2014and arguably justified. Its banning did impact Britain\u2019s connectivity by slowing the rollout of reliably fast 5G connections. Other providers, such as Ericsson and Samsung, have been forced to take up the slack, but it hasn\u2019t been enough to plug the gap and build for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut that isn\u2019t the only explanation for a situation where buying your morning espresso in cities is touch and go because patchy 5G coverage is disrupting card transactions. Experts also say there is a lack of long-term investment: turning down Huawei made things worse, but government inaction had already left us struggling\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investment has also been lacking. In 2022, government advisers estimated that getting the full 5G across the country by 2030 would require \u00a337bn. Industry could foot about one-third of that bill, but the government would have to step in and pay the rest.
