The Space Debris Conference 2026 concluded its second edition on Tuesday in Riyadh, organized by the Saudi Space Agency with extensive international participation representing 75 countries from around the world. The event brought together elite experts, decision-makers, and space sector leaders at the international level to address one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity’s space activities.

The conference was held with support from the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), along with participation from numerous local and international entities. This collaboration reflects ongoing international efforts to enhance cooperation in confronting space debris challenges and ensuring the sustainability of outer space.

Participants at the conclusion of the Space Debris Conference emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation and unifying efforts to face the growing challenges associated with space debris. This comes amid the accelerating growth of space activities and the increasing number of objects and space fragments in Earth’s orbits, which pose significant risks to operational satellites and future missions.

The conference highlighted the role that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi Space Agency, plays in supporting international initiatives and adopting best practices and advanced technologies in space debris management. These efforts contribute to protecting the safety and sustainability of space activities for current and future generations.

The conference discussed several axes related to space sustainability and governance, alongside technical and regulatory challenges associated with space debris. Participants reviewed innovative operational solutions and international partnerships that contribute to enhancing space security and sustainability in the long term. The discussions covered debris tracking systems, collision avoidance protocols, and active debris removal technologies.

The conference featured an accompanying exhibition that included 20 candidate projects within the global DebrisSolver competition. The exhibition showcased innovative solutions and applied projects aimed at addressing space debris challenges, embodying international efforts in research and innovation fields. These projects support the responsible and sustainable use of space as a shared resource for humanity, presenting cutting-edge approaches to debris mitigation and removal.

As space activities continue to expand with the proliferation of satellite constellations and commercial space ventures, the need for comprehensive debris management strategies becomes increasingly critical. The Saudi Space Agency’s leadership in hosting this conference demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in global space governance. The outcomes of this conference will inform policy development and technological innovation in the years ahead, ensuring that space remains accessible and safe for all nations.
