They&#8217;re using technology to stay ahead. They exploit gaps between sectors and countries, and they change. They shift, they adapt,&#8221; Badrinath said.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">$480 Billion Annual Cost of Digital Fraud<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, quantified the telecom fraud threat in stark terms. Digital fraud now costs $480 billion annually, equivalent to &#8220;$15,000 every second of the day,&#8221; Mittal said. He added that <a href=\"\/category\/ai\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> has widened the attack footprint, making the challenge more complex for operators and regulators alike.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mittal argued that connectivity alone is no longer sufficient. &#8220;Something more important than connectivity is about trust,&#8221; he stated, framing digital trust as the central challenge facing the industry in 2026.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trust as a Performance Driver<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orange CEO Christel Heydemann described trust as a &#8220;hard performance driver&#8221; in the AI era. She said <a href=\"\/category\/telecommunications\/\">telecom<\/a> operators now function as &#8220;architects of a trusted environment.&#8221; With AI-generated content surpassing human-created content in volume, Heydemann said citizens worry about misinformation and loss of control, while businesses focus on safety, security, reliability, and compliance.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;In an unpredictable world, connectivity must remain predictable. This means treating resilience as a strategic mission, designing for failure, recovering fast and guaranteeing continuity, even when everything else is under stress.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Christel Heydemann, CEO, Orange<\/cite><\/blockquote><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regulatory Fragmentation Undermines Progress<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mittal argued that fragmented regulation is slowing the industry&#8217;s response to fraud. &#8220;You cannot have a fragmented regulatory ecosystem,&#8221; he said, calling on every country to develop sovereign guardrails in coordination with other nations. He also urged over-the-top (OTT) platform operators to join a common regulatory framework rather than operate outside traditional <a href=\"\/category\/cybersecurity\/\">cybersecurity<\/a> and telecom rules.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Badrinath acknowledged that operators are investing in defences and intelligence sharing. However, he noted that &#8220;the majority of scams happen beyond the control of operators,&#8221; and called for closer cooperation with financial services, digital platforms, governments, and security specialists.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Industry Calls for Coordinated Action Against Telecom Fraud Threat<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the risks posed by AI, Mittal said technology remains the primary tool for combating fraud. &#8220;It is with technology and AI that we will need to counter the threats,&#8221; he stated.
