The expansion transforms the endgame experience through five new storylines, 15 new bosses including four Pinnacle encounters, and two new Ascendancy classes available to players.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Path of Exile 2 expansion introduces the Runes of Aldur League, a crafting system centered on Ezomyte Runesmithing. Players work with a character named Farrow, a blacksmith who uncovers the ancient art of inscribing symbols onto Ezomyte Remnants. Each Remnant contains pre-existing and player-selected symbols that determine the types of items players can craft, ranging from basic currency items to socketable runes with specific properties.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dynamic Risk-Reward Crafting System<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activating a Remnant during crafting reanimates nearby undead enemies, with their power scaled by the runes used in the process. Fire-aligned runes grant enemies fire-based abilities, while Moon-aligned runes introduce celestial hazards such as falling lunar beams. Players defeat these enemies to claim their crafted items by breaking the Remnant. As progression continues, more complex Remnants with additional rune slots enable the creation of rarer items while increasing encounter difficulty through additional waves of increasingly empowered enemies.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Players can also collect Verisium, a powerful metal from ancient Kalguuran origins that unlocks Runic Ward. This new defensive resource acts as a secondary life pool and fuels powerful runic abilities. The system introduces over 100 new crafting runes, including meta-crafting options like elemental conversion runes, tier-upgrading Masterwork Runes, and runes that temporarily expand an item&#8217;s modifier pool.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fortress and Reimagined Atlas<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expansion features a colossal fortress that arises during endgame progression, marking the first of several new storylines in the <a href=\"\/category\/gaming-entertainment\/\">gaming expansion<\/a>. Players must plunge into the fortress depths, activate its gates, secure keys to precursor weapons, and disarm them. The Atlas has been transformed into a fully explorable endgame world with fixed objectives in every direction, offering clear destinations to discover. Every boss in the endgame, including returning encounters, is now reachable via dedicated questline, removing reliance on random key drops for first-time access.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Atlas passive tree has been significantly redesigned, allowing players to unlock every node by completing maps throughout the fortress. Many nodes now offer meaningful multi-choice decisions for tailoring the endgame experience without repeated respeccing. A new Masters of the Atlas system introduces Ascendancy-style progression, with players aligning with different masters such as Jado of the Order of the Djinn or monster hunter Hilda, each offering unique bonuses that can be swapped between maps.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two New Ascendancy Classes<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Huntress gains the Spirit Walker ascendancy, which focuses on mastering Azmerian spirits and channeling the primal power of Stag, Owl, and Bear. By attuning to different wisps, players gain devastating abilities including summoning stampedes, empowering projectiles with feathered boons, or fighting alongside a bear companion. The Spirit Walker can harness Idolatry for massive bonuses through Idol socketables and tame beast bosses, turning creatures into loyal allies.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Monk class receives the Martial Artist ascendancy, which enables creating illusions that echo attacks, manifesting spectral bells that shatter enemies, and unleashing devastating resonance with critical strikes. Players can fortify their body with stone, empower blows with runic tattoos that socket runes directly into their form, and transcend limits with the Way of the Stonefist, transforming gloves into devastating weapons.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">League Content and Quality-of-Life Features<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four leagues introduced during Early Access\u2014Delirium, Breach, Ritual, and Expedition\u2014now feature new storylines, dedicated crafting systems, and expanded mechanics. Delirium introduces a revamped fog mechanic with a visible depth bar and new mirror shard encounters. Breach adds a visible timer displaying remaining time, with enraged phases triggering tougher enemies if kept open long enough. Ritual features a lost spirit named Aoife beckoning players to the Wildwood on the Atlas, while Expedition ties to the Runes of Aldur with Rog seeking his missing wife Gwennen across a procedurally generated ocean.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expansion marks the debut of Challenges in Path of Exile 2, with players earning pieces of the Knight of Aldur armour set upon completing all eight challenges. Progress displays in chat and through a hideout statue. Over 40 new unique items are introduced, including weapons, jewellery, and armours. Quality-of-life improvements include navigational landmarks throughout the campaign, a live-search Atlas map, and a native in-game Build Guide system allowing community creators to publish .build files with passive trees, gem selections, and item recommendations directly in the client.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Return of the Ancients is the final major content update before the full 1.0 release of Path of Exile 2.
