Shanghai:<\/strong> Huawei opened Huawei Connect 2026 on Wednesday with a keynote by Deputy Chairman and Rotating Chairman Wang Tao titled “Intelligence Ignites the New Future: Building the Silicon Black Soil of the Intelligent World,” in which the company unveiled the Atlas 960E SuperPoD, the first AI computing system in the industry built on near-packaged optics (NPO), and confirmed that its Ascend 960 chip is running ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three-day event, held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center and the Shanghai Expo Center from 17 to 19 September, is Huawei’s flagship showcase for its AI infrastructure strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Huawei is doubling down on AI infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wang framed the announcements around the pace of AI demand. According to Huawei, large model parameters are already approaching 10 trillion and will exceed 100 trillion by 2030. AI agents that can now work continuously for hours will execute tasks over months by the end of the decade. Daily inference in China has reached roughly 500 trillion tokens and is projected to reach the quadrillion scale by 2030. On the device side, smartphone models have grown from 3 billion parameters in 2024 to 30 billion today, with 100 billion parameter models on the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against that backdrop, Wang said Huawei’s AI strategy remains centered on computing power, with hardware as the commercial model. The company will build competitiveness through “SuperPoD plus cluster” system architecture innovation, maintain an open source and open compute ecosystem, support mainstream large models trained natively on Ascend, offer flexible on-premises and cloud compute, extend AI to phones, PCs, cars and IoT devices, and rebuild communications networks around delivering compute to users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SuperPoDs move from concept to consensus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Huawei reported that more than 1,000 SuperPoDs built on the Ascend 910C have now been deployed, and that the Atlas 950 SuperPoD is in volume commercial use. Wang argued that the SuperPoD, a system in which multiple computing nodes are tightly linked by a high-efficiency interconnect and share unified memory addressing so that they behave logically as a single computer, has become the shared view of industry, academia and research institutes for building very large AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case rests on utilization. Huawei said 100,000 card clusters are now standard for training 10 trillion parameter frontier models, yet conventional server architectures spend more than 40 percent of training time on intra-cluster communication, dragging down model FLOPs utilization (MFU). Simulations by Huawei’s Markov Lab showed a 100,000 card cluster built from 4,096 card SuperPoDs achieved 2.75 times the MFU of the same cluster built from eight-card servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ascend 960 arrives early, with a roadmap to 980<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Huawei said the Ascend 960 chip’s development has exceeded expectations and its performance has doubled. The Ascend 960DT will be ready in the first quarter of 2027, three quarters ahead of the original plan, and the Ascend 960PR in the third quarter of 2027, one quarter early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company committed to a one generation per year cadence, with the Ascend 970 due in 2028 and the Ascend 980 in 2029. Under what Huawei calls the \u03c4 (tau) law, each generation is expected to double compute while significantly raising memory bandwidth, memory capacity and interconnect bandwidth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Ascend processors, Huawei has built a family of eleven key chips around its UnifiedBus interconnect, covering compute, interconnect, storage and management functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi-ONE: optics move next to the silicon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The centerpiece of the interconnect story is Hi-ONE, Huawei’s new near-packaged optics product. By placing optical engines close to the compute silicon and balancing optical, mechanical, electrical, magnetic and thermal design, Hi-ONE delivers 7.2 terabits of transmission capacity per engine. Huawei describes it as the industry’s first NPO product in mass production, the highest capacity NPO available, and the only one with an integrated light source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huawei has also proposed an NPO standardization project at the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), which it says has drawn broad support from industry partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Atlas 960E SuperPoD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Built on the Ascend 960 chip and Hi-ONE, the Atlas 960E SuperPoD is a 4,096 card system delivering up to 8 EFLOPS of FP8 compute and up to 1 PB of HBM capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The optical numbers are the headline. A single SuperPoD uses 5,500 Hi-ONE modules in place of the roughly 48,000 800G pluggable optical modules a conventional design would require. Huawei said this cuts power consumption by more than 550 kilowatts, doubles mean time between failures, and lifts system availability to 99.8 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huawei’s 2025 roadmap listed the system as the Atlas 960 SuperPoD; the launched model carries the E suffix, and Huawei’s Chinese-language materials call it the Ascend 960 SuperPoD. Reports from the keynote indicate a liquid-cooled version is planned for the third quarter of 2027, with an air-cooled variant in the second quarter of 2027, although these dates were not included in the written release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

TaiShan 950 SuperPoD and OceanStor M900 memory storage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Huawei argued that training and serving 10 trillion parameter models now requires a complete computing system rather than a single AI server or SuperPoD: AI compute SuperPoDs, general purpose compute SuperPoDs, a peer-to-peer interconnect with no protocol conversion, and for inference, a petabyte-scale KV cache cluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TaiShan 950 SuperPoD, its general computing counterpart, has been upgraded. Using UnifiedBus all-optical networking it now scales to 4,096 nodes with a unified memory pool of up to 256 TB. In agent sandbox workloads, Huawei said launching 100,000 sandboxes is 30 times faster than on conventional servers, with sandbox density up 25 percent. In vector search across tens of billions of vectors with thousands of dimensions, retrieval performance doubled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For inference, Huawei introduced OceanStor M900, which it calls AI memory storage. It sits at what Huawei terms the L3.5 tier of a multi-level KV cache architecture, provides petabyte-scale capacity, and connects to compute over UnifiedBus with a single hop. A hybrid-media design and an optimized retention algorithm extend SSD read and write life by 16 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agentic SuperPoD cluster: up to one million cards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tying the pieces together, Huawei unveiled the Agentic SuperPoD cluster. By unifying multiple interconnect protocols under UnifiedBus, the cluster links Atlas SuperPoDs, TaiShan SuperPoDs and KV cache clusters as peers, sharply reducing protocol conversion overhead and allowing every KV cache tier to be reached in one hop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using a two-tier CLOS four-plane network, a single cluster scales to 512,000 cards. With multi-rail topology, Huawei said the maximum rises to one million Ascend cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Open ecosystem numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Huawei positioned open source as a core strategy. Kunpeng now counts more than 4.16 million developers worldwide, over 7,200 ecosystem partners, support for more than 560 global open source projects, and over 20 million openEuler installations, which Huawei said gives it the largest server operating system share in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Ascend side, the CANN software stack has moved to routine open source community operation. External developers now outnumber internal ones at 61 percent of contributors, monthly active developers exceed 5,200, and more than 40 models have been trained natively on Ascend plus CANN. Ascend is integrated with more than 90 third-party communities including PyTorch, Triton, vLLM and veRL. With backing from the Linux Foundation, Ascend has become a compute platform that can be installed directly from the official PyTorch website, the first from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

AI on devices and in cars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Huawei outlined a four-part device strategy: on-device compute through the Kirin and Ascend combination, on-device intelligence through Pangu and third-party models, HarmonyOS rebuilt from the architecture up as an “Agent OS” in which agents and people share the system, and a broad AI app ecosystem around the Xiaoyi assistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company will focus on four device compute platforms, AI Phone, AI PC, the car and the home, using device-to-device and device-to-cloud coordination to deliver continuous intelligent services across personal, office, in-car and home spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Networks built around compute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wang closed the technology section with connectivity, arguing that compute without networks is an information island. Huawei is repositioning its networks from connecting people to delivering compute, combining 5G-A and 6G, 10-gigabit optical access and multi-level low-latency transport to link the center, the edge and the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“AI may be the last technological revolution of human society,” Wang said. “Its depth, breadth and speed of change far exceed imagination, and no single company can support the entire intelligent world alone.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
