LG Air Cooled Magnetic Bearing Centrifugal Chiller, 01
LG Electronics has launched an air-cooled centrifugal chiller designed to address expanding data center cooling requirements in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and regional facilities. The new cooling unit delivers capacities ranging from 480 to 600 RT per unit to support intensive computational workloads.
Magnetic Bearing Compression Technology
At the center of the equipment is an oil-free magnetic bearing centrifugal compressor. By using magnetic suspension for the rotating shaft, the mechanism removes physical friction and eliminates lubricating oil requirements, which increases compression efficiency during sustained operation.
The system also integrates refrigerant free-cooling technology that circulates refrigerant directly using cool outdoor air. Unlike traditional setups, it avoids intermediate heat exchangers and glycol solutions. Based on internal simulation data, this approach uses approximately 30 percent less energy annually than conventional waterside systems.

Advancements in Data Center Cooling Reliability
Consistent thermal regulation remains essential for modern artificial intelligence operations. The chiller incorporates gap sensors within the magnetic bearing system to monitor the rotation axis precisely, while machine learning algorithms adapt to shifting operational patterns to prevent electrical surges.
An integrated uninterruptible power supply provides emergency backup during electrical interruptions, allowing the compressor shaft to stop safely without bearing damage. Furthermore, the quick recovery function restores complete cooling capacity within 3 minutes after power returns.
Centralized Infrastructure Management
Facility operators can manage complex equipment using Data Center Cooling Management software. This platform provides integrated monitoring across chillers, computer room air handlers, and coolant distribution units through predictive maintenance tools and virtual sensor diagnostics.
Real-time optimization adjusts mechanical output according to live computing hardware demands. Consequently, maintenance teams can identify operational anomalies early and prevent unplanned facility downtime.
Manufacturing and Industry Validation
LG manufactures key components internally, including electric motors, inverters, and magnetic bearings. The equipment holds certifications from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, along with ASME, ETL, and CE safety compliance standards.
“As AI data centers become increasingly dense and heat-intensive, energy-efficient, reliable cooling is more critical than ever.”
James Lee, President of the LG ES Company
In addition, the company presented its modular hydronic cooling system at Data Centre World Asia 2026 in Singapore, featuring standardized prefabrication that accelerates deployment for enterprise telecommunications and computing facilities.
