Eight Sleep App
Medical authorities in Abu Dhabi have cleared new technology to assist in at-home sleep apnea diagnosis for adult patients across the emirate. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi issued the approval following a formal Health Technology Assessment conducted under international regulatory benchmarks.
Announced during the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit 2026, the regulatory decision classifies the Eight Sleep smart bed as an authorized medical device. Consequently, licensed physicians can now prescribe the hardware to monitor individuals showing symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea directly in their homes.
At-Home Sleep Apnea Diagnosis and Clinical Evaluation
The system records physiological signals throughout the night to generate an Apnea-Hypopnea Index score. This metric calculates the frequency of breathing pauses or shallow respiration periods during rest. In addition, the bed tracks heart rate, movement, and specific respiratory disturbances without requiring specialized clinic sensors.
Medical professionals do not rely on automated metrics alone to confirm a case. A qualified healthcare specialist evaluates each recorded result alongside patient medical history, physical examinations, and clinical testing. Standard diagnostic tests remain available whenever doctors require secondary verification.
“Sleep apnea is one of the most common conditions in medicine and one of the most underdiagnosed, in part because we have measured it one night at a time in a lab setting.”
Matteo Franceschetti, Co-Founder and CEO of Eight Sleep
Addressing Long-Term Health Risks
Obstructive sleep apnea affects nearly one billion people globally and correlates with serious medical complications. Clinical data links untreated breathing disruptions to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline. Because symptoms fluctuate nightly, single-session laboratory studies can overlook critical respiratory patterns.
Longitudinal data collection addresses these diagnostic gaps by capturing real-world patterns over consecutive weeks. Physicians receive continuous information regarding how patients rest in their natural domestic environment rather than during an artificial clinical stay.
Regulatory Framework in Abu Dhabi
The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi evaluated the sleep system through its Health Technology Assessment program. The agency maintains full membership in the International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment, aligning local review procedures with established global bodies.
“Much of what shapes long-term health happens outside the clinic, and sleep is one of the clearest examples. Abu Dhabi’s intelligent health system gives new health technologies a clear path to demonstrate, through clinical evidence, how they support prevention and care, so conditions like sleep apnea are detected and treated earlier.”
Dr Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei, Executive Director of Health and Life Sciences at DoH
Integration of Smart Bed Data and Future Outlook
Earlier this year, local regulators and Eight Sleep initiated research examining how AI algorithms evaluate population health data. The preliminary clinical study connected home sensor inputs with public health records to improve long-term disease management.
Researchers examined whether real-time adjustments to physical body positioning could reduce nighttime breathing disruptions. As digital tools expand into primary care, standard sleep apnea diagnosis protocols continue adapting toward continuous, home-based health monitoring.
