King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has officially launched the KAUST Quantum Foundry, a specialized quantum device manufacturing program designed to advance Saudi Arabia’s capabilities in quantum technology development. This strategic initiative represents a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s commitment to emerging technologies and positions KAUST as a national center for advanced research infrastructure.

The KAUST Quantum Foundry program introduces a comprehensive framework for manufacturing quantum device prototypes and developing their production processes. By providing organized and shared access to KAUST’s specialized clean rooms, the initiative fosters collaboration between industrial and academic partners in the emerging quantum technology field. This integrated approach enables researchers and companies to work together on cutting-edge quantum applications while maintaining the highest standards of manufacturing precision.

Advanced Infrastructure and Process Development

The quantum manufacturing facility at KAUST distinguishes itself through a specialized operational model tailored specifically for quantum technologies. Built upon the university’s advanced research infrastructure and laboratory expertise, the facility emphasizes process standardization and the development of Process Design Kits (PDKs). These PDKs enable researchers to design and manufacture devices according to standardized and defined processes, facilitating production scaling and reproducibility beyond individual laboratory boundaries.

The KAUST Quantum Foundry will be implemented in progressive phases, with capabilities expanding gradually as processes, expertise, and infrastructure develop. The program targets support for multiple quantum platforms, including superconducting technologies, photonics, and hybrid approaches. This phased implementation strategy ensures sustainable growth while maintaining quality and innovation standards throughout the development process.

Supporting National Innovation and Strategic Applications

The quantum manufacturing program strengthens KAUST’s role as a national center for advanced research infrastructure, supporting long-term innovation priorities in the Kingdom. The facility provides a shared framework for leveraging quantum technologies in support of KAUST’s strategic missions, ranging from energy development and materials discovery to enabling ultra-sensitive sensing technologies in food, water, health, and Red Sea research applications.

Integration with artificial intelligence represents another key dimension of the KAUST Quantum Foundry’s vision. By combining quantum technologies with AI capabilities, the facility addresses complex scientific challenges that exceed the capabilities of traditional approaches. This convergence of quantum computing and artificial intelligence contributes to long-term research impact that serves national priorities and positions Saudi Arabia as a leader in quantum technology innovation and commercialization.

Technology Transfer and Commercial Pathways

The KAUST Quantum Foundry establishes clear pathways for technology transfer and early-stage commercialization within KAUST’s innovation ecosystem, including the National Transformation Institute. This structured approach to moving quantum technologies from research to market applications accelerates the development of commercial and reproducible quantum devices. The program’s comprehensive support system enables researchers and entrepreneurs to navigate the complex journey from prototype development to scalable manufacturing, ultimately contributing to the Kingdom’s economic diversification and technological advancement goals.
