Huawei will unveil the HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner on February 26 in Madrid, marking a significant advancement in professional athletic tracking technology. The company developed the watch over five years with input from world-class athletes, focusing on accuracy improvements in heart rate zones, lactate threshold monitoring, and GPS tracking in complex terrains.

The watch features Huawei’s proprietary TruSense and Sunflower positioning technologies. It will debut alongside the Mate 80 Pro smartphone and the MatePad Mini tablet, expanding Huawei’s product ecosystem.

Early Testing with Elite Athletes

Several runners from the dsm-firmenich Running Team wore the unreleased watch at the Burj2Burj Half Marathon in Dubai earlier this month. The competitive testing generated public interest before the official launch, according to the company.

Real-world data from professional athletes, including heart rate zones, lactate threshold fluctuations, and high-altitude performance metrics, feeds directly into Huawei’s algorithms. This collaboration ensures the watch’s features align with professional runners’ requirements.

Technical Development and Testing

Huawei invested five years in research and development for running technology. The company recruited over 100 runners for long-term testing programs. Additionally, Huawei developed machine learning models for fatigue assessment to provide runners with exercise guidance based on scientific data.

“The new generation of the WATCH GT Runner is capable of accurate positioning for stable route and pace data, even in challenging environments,”

Huawei stated in the announcement

Positioning Technology for Complex Terrains

The watch provides accurate positioning for stable route and pace data in challenging environments. This capability addresses a critical need for professional runners who require precise tracking during training and competition.

Product Launch Event Details

The Madrid launch event will feature three products. The Mate 80 Pro represents the return of Huawei’s Mate Series after a three-year hiatus. The MatePad Mini tablet marks an expansion of the company’s device portfolio.

Huawei’s Consumer Business Group reported total research and development spending of more than $23 billion in 2023, representing 23.4% of the company’s total revenue. The total R&D investment over the past decade exceeds $154 billion.

Market Positioning

The company positions the HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner for the professional athletic market. The watch aims to set a benchmark in the wearable industry for sports tracking capabilities, according to Huawei.
