ABU DHABI – Uber Technologies and WeRide officially launched the first Uber robotaxi Abu Dhabi commercial service today, marking the first time Level 4 autonomous vehicles have operated on the Uber platform outside the United States.

The deployment, which utilizes WeRide’s autonomous driving systems, began public operations on Yas Island on November 26, 2025. This initiative follows the issuance of the world’s first city-level fully driverless permit granted outside the U.S., endorsed by Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre.

Operational Scope and Technology

The service allows passengers to hail a fully autonomous vehicle directly through the Uber app. Unlike previous trials that required a safety driver behind the wheel, these vehicles operate without human intervention. WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD) provides the underlying technology, classified as Level 4 autonomy, meaning the system can handle all aspects of driving in certain conditions without human input.

This launch represents a significant shift in the region’s adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the transport sector. By integrating WeRide’s hardware into the Uber (NYSE: UBER) network, the companies aim to validate the scalability of driverless mobility in complex urban environments.

Regional Smart Mobility Context

While this launch occurs in the UAE, it serves as a critical case study for the broader GCC region. As Saudi Arabia accelerates its digital economy infrastructure under Vision 2030, the regulatory frameworks established for the Uber robotaxi Abu Dhabi project offer a potential blueprint for future deployments in Saudi smart cities.

The collaboration highlights the growing reliance on Cloud Computing and high-speed data transfer to manage the real-time processing required for safe autonomous navigation.
